Australian economic and labour market outcomes are driving immigration changes at DIAC. The skilled migration system is changing from Independent migrants to employer sponsored migrants. It is now known that migrants with employers achieve better outcomes. This is now becoming a demand driven migration programme which essentially means it is labour market driven. Net Overseas Migration (NOM) is defined as long term arrivals minus long term departures. In the most recent NOM, overseas students led to an increase in the NOM, but now this number is falling. There was a large build up in the student area with only a small number of students remaining for work purposes.Last Blog Posts
